Step by step
What happens during a solar system installation?
A photovoltaic installation in Switzerland typically proceeds in the following steps:
Step 1 — Consultation and quote
A certified installer visits your roof, evaluates the orientation, pitch and area and creates a tailored quote.
Step 2 — Planning and permit
The installer handles the notification with the municipality or — for installations requiring a permit — the building application. In most cases a solar system on the roof is permit-free.
Step 3 — Material procurement
Modules, inverter, mounting system and any battery storage are ordered and delivered.
Step 4 — Installation
The actual installation typically takes 1 to 3 days for a single-family home. The team mounts the modules, lays the cables and installs the inverter.
Step 5 — Commissioning and registration
After installation the system is commissioned and registered with the local grid operator. The installer typically also handles the application for the one-time remuneration (OUR) with Pronovo.
Scheduling
How long does the installation take?
Duration depends on the size of the system. The lead time — from quote to installation — is currently 4 to 12 weeks in Switzerland, depending on installer availability and component delivery times.
| System size | Installation time |
|---|---|
| 5–8 kWp (small detached house) | 1–2 days |
| 8–12 kWp (standard detached house) | 2–3 days |
| 12–30 kWp (apartment building) | 3–5 days |
| 30+ kWp (commercial) | 1–2 weeks |

Costs
How much does installing a solar system cost?
Installation costs are included in the total price. Typical reference values for a single-family home:
| System size | Total cost incl. installation |
|---|---|
| 5 kWp | CHF 13,000 – 18,000 |
| 8 kWp | CHF 18,000 – 25,000 |
| 10 kWp | CHF 22,000 – 30,000 |
After deducting the federal subsidy (one-time remuneration OUR), the costs are reduced by CHF 300–400 per kWp. By comparing multiple quotes you can save several thousand francs more.
Checklist
What to look for when choosing an installer?
Not every installer offers the same quality. Check these points:
- Certification — Is the company recognised and does it have proven experience?
- Local presence — A local installer knows the cantonal regulations and subsidies
- References — Have they completed comparable projects in your region?
- Guarantees — What guarantees does the installer offer on mounting, modules and inverter?
- Value for money — Only by comparing multiple quotes can you see whether a price is fair
PVPro.ch checks all these criteria in advance — you only receive quotes from companies that meet our standards.

Tip
Always ask for at least 3 reference projects in your region and have the guarantee conditions confirmed in writing — before you sign.

Frequently asked questions
How long does the installation of a solar system for a single-family home take?+
The actual installation typically takes 1 to 3 days for a single-family home. The total lead time from order placement is 4 to 12 weeks.
Do I need to be present during the installation?+
Not necessarily. However, it is recommended to be present on the first day and during commissioning to understand how everything works and to ask questions.
Who handles the registration with the municipality?+
As a rule, the installer handles the notification or building permit application with the municipality as well as the application for the one-time remuneration with Pronovo.
Can I install a solar system myself?+
In Switzerland, the electrical installation must be carried out by a certified electrician. The module mounting could technically be done yourself, but is not recommended for safety reasons.
What happens after the installation?+
After commissioning, the system is registered with the local grid operator. The installer ensures everything works correctly and explains the operation.
